Illinois AI SEO Agency for Chicago, Naperville, Rockford and Peoria Businesses
Portland Peak SEO works as an Illinois AI SEO agency from Lake Oswego, OR, at published prices of $450, $950 and $2,500 a month. On October 2, 2026 a search for an AI SEO agency, located in Illinois, came back as a page about Chicago: four firms in the overview, all in Chicago or its suburbs, and six of nine organic results about the city. The rest of the state was barely there. The capture, the county figures and the work are below.

ILLINOIS · AI OVERVIEWS · AI MODE · CHATGPT · PERPLEXITY · COPILOTWhat does an Illinois AI SEO agency do, and does the business have to be in Chicago?
An Illinois AI SEO agency gets a business named in the answers Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity write when someone in Illinois asks for a provider. Portland Peak SEO does it from Lake Oswego, OR, for $450, $950 or $2,500 a month, and a business does not need to be in Chicago for it to work.
The Chicago question comes first because the results page raises it. When a statewide search is answered almost entirely with one city, a business in Rockford, Springfield or Carbondale can reasonably wonder whether AI search has room for it. It does, and the reason is the same one that made the page so Chicago-heavy: answer engines quote what has been written, and almost nothing has been written for the rest of Illinois. A precise page fills a gap rather than joining a queue.
This page covers the AI layer, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. Classic search across Illinois, market by market, with industries, coverage and the first 180 days, is on the Illinois SEO company page. What did Google show when Illinois asked for an AI SEO agency?
On October 2, 2026, Google answered ai seo agency illinois with a 3,282-character AI Overview built around 4 Business Profile cards: one firm in Palos Hills, two in Schaumburg and one in Chicago. Every firm it named sat in Cook County's orbit, and its advice put AI receptionists beside AI SEO.
| Firm on the listing card | City on the card | What the overview said it does |
|---|---|---|
| Golden AI Marketing Agency | Palos Hills | AI-driven marketing campaigns, content creation and SEO |
| Proceed Innovative | Schaumburg | Local SEO, web design and AI search optimization |
| Aipple Marketing Agency | Schaumburg | Automated response systems, 24/7 AI employee answering and local marketing |
| Loud Interactive | Chicago | Enterprise technical SEO combined with AI |
The capture used DataForSEO's live Google endpoint on desktop with the location set to Illinois and the overview expanded. It opened with one sentence saying that several Illinois agencies use AI in their SEO and lead generation, then showed the four listing cards above under the heading Notable AI and SEO Agencies in Illinois, each with its rating and a line of description. A section headed What to Look For in an AI SEO Agency followed, with three points: optimization for generative engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini; automation and lead capture through AI receptionists and SMS follow-ups; and transparent audits with a baseline.
Only two of its sources could be opened as web pages: a directory of the top SEO companies in Chicago and an Aurora agency's local SEO page. The rest of its links led back into Google's own listing views. There was no local pack, no ad and no related searches, and four People Also Ask questions sat under the organic results. Portland Peak SEO was not in the overview or the organic results, and this is the first page it has written for the search. The raw response is stored with this page's research, and the search is captured again each month.
Why did a statewide Illinois search come back as a page about Chicago?
The search said Illinois and the results said Chicago. Of the 9 organic results on October 2, 2026, 6 were about Chicago, 1 about Aurora, 1 about Pontiac and 1 was a LinkedIn profile, so a reader outside the Chicago area got almost nothing written for the place they live.
| Organic position | Website | What the page was about |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | revenuebase.ai | A company-data list of the top 25 SEO companies based in Chicago |
| 2 | empactmarketing.com | A Chicago SEO service page |
| 3 | outsourceaccelerator.com | A list of the top 50 SEO firms in Chicago |
| 4 | localmighty.com | An Aurora local SEO and AI SEO page, also cited in the overview |
| 5 | quora.com | A thread asking for the best SEO agencies in Chicago |
| 6 | a2zdevcenter.com | A Chicago SEO company page with published prices |
| 7 | ontoplist.com | A list of the top 12 SEO companies in Chicago, also cited in the overview |
| 8 | linkedin.com | One person's profile, a digital and AI strategy director |
| 9 | mv3marketing.com | A B2B marketing page for Pontiac |
The likely reason is supply. Chicago is where Illinois agencies write about themselves, where the directories build their lists and where the national list sites aim their pages, so a search engine looking for anything about AI SEO agencies in Illinois finds Chicago first and little else. Nothing on the page suggests Google preferred Chicago; it simply had more Chicago to show. Three of the nine results were lists of Chicago firms, and two of those lists were from sites that build the same list for many cities.
For a business outside Cook County, that is the opening. A buyer in Bloomington, Rockford or Champaign asking an answer engine for a local provider is asking a question the engine has very little material to answer, and a single honest page naming the service, the city and the county is more than most of its competitors have published. The next capture will show whether that changes.
Where are Illinois's marketing firms, and where are its residents moving?
Illinois had 12,710,158 residents on July 1, 2024, 88,930 fewer than in 2020, and 6,422 marketing-services firms, 0.51 per 1,000, level with the national rate. Cook County holds 2,442 of them, while DuPage County, at 0.52 per 1,000, is denser than Cook's 0.47.
| County | Residents, 2024 | Change since 2020 | Marketing firms | Per 1,000 residents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cook (Chicago, Schaumburg, Palos Hills) | 5,182,617 | 84,455 fewer | 2,442 | 0.47 |
| DuPage (Naperville, Wheaton) | 937,142 | 5,634 more | 487 | 0.52 |
| Lake (Waukegan, Libertyville) | 718,604 | 5,178 more | 272 | 0.38 |
| Will (Joliet) | 708,583 | 11,674 more | 128 | 0.18 |
| Kane (Aurora, Elgin) | 520,997 | 4,594 more | 146 | 0.28 |
| McHenry (Crystal Lake) | 315,959 | 5,986 more | 73 | 0.23 |
| Winnebago (Rockford) | 283,790 | 1,173 fewer | 46 | 0.16 |
| Champaign (Champaign-Urbana) | 212,374 | 6,122 more | 25 | 0.12 |
| Peoria | 179,630 | 1,882 fewer | 27 | 0.15 |
| The other 93 counties | 396 | |||
| No county assigned by BLS | 2,380 |
Residents are from the Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 population estimates. Firms are 2024 annual averages for private employers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, in the Illinois QCEW file and the county files, read on October 2, 2026. A marketing firm here is an establishment in industry 5418, advertising and public relations, of which Illinois has 3,310, or 541613, marketing consulting, of which it has 3,112. BLS counts 2,380 Illinois firms in the state total without assigning them to a county, so each county figure is a floor and the rows add up to less than the state.
Two patterns stand out. The first is that the densest county is not Cook. DuPage runs 0.52 firms per 1,000 residents against Cook's 0.47, and Cook is the county that lost people, 84,455 of them between 2020 and 2024, nearly all of the state's net loss of 88,930. The second is how fast the field thins with distance from Chicago. Kane and McHenry run 0.28 and 0.23, Will 0.18, and the three downstate counties in the table 0.12 to 0.16, among the lowest rates measured in any of the eight states in this research.
Is a suburban Chicago business really competing with Chicago?
The five collar counties around Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane and McHenry, gained 33,066 residents from 2020 to 2024 while Cook lost 84,455. They hold 1,106 marketing firms between them, and Will County, which grew the most of the five, has the thinnest field at 0.18 per 1,000.
Only if its pages let it. A Wheaton accountant, a Libertyville dentist or a Crystal Lake roofer whose website talks about the Chicago area in general is asking to be compared with every firm in Cook County. One whose service pages open with the suburb, the county and the service is answering a narrower question, the one a buyer in that suburb actually types or speaks. Google's Illinois overview took its single suburban source, the Aurora page, from exactly that kind of page.
Will County is the clearest case. It added 11,674 residents, more than any other collar county, and has 128 marketing firms for 708,583 people. Every new household in Joliet, Plainfield, Bolingbrook or New Lenox has to find a dentist, a plumber and an accountant for the first time. A page that names those towns plainly is one of few written for them.
What does AI search look like for a Rockford, Peoria or Champaign business?
Winnebago, Peoria and Champaign counties, home to Rockford, Peoria and Champaign-Urbana, have 98 marketing firms for 675,794 residents, between 0.12 and 0.16 per 1,000. On October 2, 2026, the only page on Google's first page about any downstate city was a B2B marketing page for Pontiac.
Thin is the word. Winnebago County has 46 marketing firms for 283,790 residents, Peoria County 27 for 179,630 and Champaign County 25 for 212,374. Those rates, 0.12 to 0.16 per 1,000, are between a quarter and a third of DuPage County's. Fewer local agencies means fewer local agency pages, and it also means fewer local businesses whose pages have been written with answer engines in mind.
The Pontiac page on page one shows how little it takes to appear. It was a single B2B marketing page about one small downstate city, and on this afternoon it held an organic position on a search about the whole state. A Peoria contractor, a Champaign clinic or a Rockford manufacturer that publishes one accurate page per service, names its city and county in the first sentence, and keeps its Business Profile identical to that page has very little standing between it and the answer.
What does this page add that the Illinois results left out?
Three findings on this page appear on none of the 9 pages Google ranked for ai seo agency illinois on October 2, 2026. The statewide search was answered with Chicago. The overview mixed AI phone answering into AI SEO advice. And DuPage County, not Cook, is the densest agency county in Illinois among those measured.
Located in Illinois, the search returned six Chicago pages out of nine and four overview firms in or around Chicago. The only downstate page was about Pontiac.
One overview firm was described by its AI employee answering, and the buying advice paired SEO with AI receptionists. Nobody on page one separated the two purchases.
DuPage: 487 firms, 0.52 per 1,000. Cook: 2,442 firms, 0.47 per 1,000, after losing 84,455 residents. The suburbs, not the city, carry the densest Illinois agency field measured.
How much does it cost to hire someone to do SEO in Illinois?
Hiring Portland Peak SEO costs an Illinois business $450, $950 or $2,500 a month, published and month to month. On October 2, 2026, one Chicago agency on page one also published its prices, from $750 to $4,000 a month, and a directory put typical Chicago fees at $1,000 to $10,000.
That Chicago agency is worth crediting: a page that states its starting price and its tiers before a sales call is rare on any results page in this research, and it lets a buyer compare like with like. The directory's range, by contrast, was a description of the market, and it covered everything from a single location to a national campaign. Neither tells a buyer what the work at a given price includes, which is the question to ask every firm.
Portland Peak SEO's three plans are identical in every state. Local, at $450 a month, aligns the Business Profile with the website and rewrites the main service pages to answer first. Growth, at $950, adds a crawler test, schema and entity work and the monthly overview capture. Authority, at $2,500, covers every tracked AI surface, with a separate capture for Chicago and for each other Illinois metro the client serves. What each plan includes and excludes is on the pricing page, with the AI work itemized on the AI SEO pricing page. None of the plans buys a citation, a ranking or a pack position.
What is the best SEO company in Chicago, and how would anyone know?
No single best SEO company in Chicago can be read off Google's first page. On October 2, 2026, the Illinois results carried 3 ranked lists of Chicago firms, a Quora thread asking the same question and 4 overview cards rated 4.9 to 5.0 stars, none of which measured AI search results.
| Check | Question to put to any Chicago firm | Portland Peak SEO's answer |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Which named person writes the pages and the reports? | Andreas Benavente, founder; Thomas Johnston, marketing manager |
| What it costs | Is the monthly price published, with its scope? | Yes: $450, $950 or $2,500 |
| What it proved | Can each result shown be traced to a starting figure and a date? | No Illinois result is shown, because none is in the verified record |
| What it saw | Where and when was each AI answer captured? | Illinois, desktop, October 2, 2026 |
| What you keep | Are the website, Profile and analytics in the client's name? | Yes, all of them |
The three lists ranked 12, 25 and 50 firms respectively, which is a sign of how they were built: to be complete, not to choose. The Quora thread was a question with opinions under it. The overview cards showed ratings so close together that they separate nothing. None of them could say whether any listed firm had ever got a client named in an AI answer, which is the outcome an AI SEO buyer is paying for. The five checks above can be put to any firm in writing, and the answers are more telling than any position on a list.
Portland Peak SEO has 5 reviews and publishes that number. It carries no rating markup on this page or on any client's page, because ratings in schema that cannot be matched to a verifiable source invite a manual action from Google.
Should an Illinois business buy AI SEO and an AI receptionist from the same firm?
1 of the 4 firms in the October 2, 2026 Illinois overview was described by its 24/7 AI employee answering, and the overview advised buyers that many AI-focused agencies pair SEO with AI receptionists. Those are 2 products: one gets a business named in answers, the other answers its phone.
Buying both from one firm is not wrong, but it makes comparison harder. A bundle priced as AI marketing can hide how much of the fee goes to software that answers calls and how much to the search work that makes calls happen in the first place. An Illinois buyer comparing proposals should ask for the two priced separately, and should ask the search side the same questions it would ask any SEO firm: what changes, who does it, what it costs and how the result is measured.
Portland Peak SEO sells only the search side. It does not build receptionists, chatbots or SMS follow-up systems. It does measure what happens after an answer engine sends a visitor, through Search Console, sessions tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com and Business Profile calls, so a client running its own answering service can see where the calls began.
Is SEO being phased out, and is it still worth it with AI in Illinois?
SEO is not being phased out in Illinois; it supplies the inputs. On October 2, 2026, the Illinois overview built its list from 4 Business Profile cards and cited a directory and an agency page, and every one of those is something classic local SEO has always maintained.
Look at what the Illinois overview needed in order to exist. It needed Business Profiles with categories, cities and ratings, which is local SEO. It needed a directory page about Chicago and an agency page about Aurora, both of which also held organic positions on the same search, which is organic SEO. Without those inputs it would have had nothing to write. Google says as much in its own documentation: its AI features page says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and its AI optimization guide describes the work as SEO.
The second question in this pair, whether it is worth it, has a measurable answer for each business. A visitor who arrives from ChatGPT carries a tag in analytics; Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside its totals; a Business Profile reports its calls. Portland Peak SEO sets those figures against a baseline taken before any change, so the question is answered with the client's own numbers rather than an opinion about the industry.
What does Portland Peak SEO change for an Illinois business?
An Illinois account starts with 3 assets the October 2, 2026 overview actually used: the Business Profile, the website's service pages and the listings that describe the business. Each is made to state identical facts, the pages are rewritten to answer first, and the answers are captured monthly.
| Asset | What changes | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile | Category, services, hours, city and description made exact and identical to the website | The Profile as it appears in the Illinois overview and pack captures |
| Service pages | One page per real service, opening with 40 to 60 words that name the business, the service, the Illinois city and county and one checkable number | Whether the page is cited, captured monthly |
| Listings | The directories and data sites that describe the business brought into line with the Profile | Reported in the monthly written report |
| Crawler access | Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot tested against the live site, per OpenAI's bot documentation and each engine's own | Server responses for each bot |
| Schema | Business, service, area, prices and FAQ, each also visible on the page; no rating or review markup | Validation, and a match against the visible text |
The order follows the published plan for every account: access and Profile repairs with a dated baseline in month one, answer-first rewrites of key pages in month two with schema on the Growth and Authority plans, then listings, reviews and links from month three onward, with a fair verdict after 90 to 180 days. Not on the list: an llms.txt file sold as a way into Google, which its guide says Search does not use; keywords added to a Profile name; a copy of one page for every suburb with only the town changed.
Can an Oregon firm serve an Illinois business two time zones away?
Illinois runs 2 hours ahead of Lake Oswego throughout the year, because Central and Pacific time change on the same dates. Portland Peak SEO, founded in 2015, has no Illinois office; its work is pages, settings and written reports, and a 9 a.m. Chicago start is a 7 a.m. Oregon one.
The client owns its website, Search Console, Business Profile and analytics and grants access to each; nothing is held in the agency's name, and access can be withdrawn at any time. The founder writes each monthly report himself, and reviews every change before it goes live.
What distance does rule out is a place in Illinois map results. Portland Peak SEO has no Illinois address and does not invent one, so it will not appear in an Illinois local pack, and it says so. Andreas Benavente founded the firm in 2015 and writes and maintains this page; Thomas Johnston is the marketing manager. Both appear in this page's schema and on the about page.
What can no Illinois AI SEO agency promise?
No Illinois AI SEO agency can promise a place in the overview. On October 2, 2026, Google picked 4 firms for this search from Business Profile data, and the next capture may pick others. Portland Peak SEO promises the work and a dated account of whether the business appeared.
This page leaves out an Illinois case study, because none is in the firm's verified record, and a ranking count, because the dated export that would support one is not attached. It describes the four firms in the overview only by what the overview said, and gives no review counts for them.
The rest can be checked from Illinois today: repeat the search and compare; open the Census and BLS files and redo the county arithmetic, including the 2,380 firms with no county; match the three prices against the pricing page and this page's schema.
Illinois businesses ask about AI SEO agencies
Does a Naperville or Aurora business need its own page, separate from Chicago?
Yes, if it serves customers there. Naperville sits in DuPage and Will counties and Aurora mostly in Kane, and DuPage alone has 937,142 residents and 487 marketing firms. The only suburban page on the October 2, 2026 results was an agency's Aurora page, which the overview also cited. A suburb named plainly in a page's first sentence is a separate answer from Chicago, not a smaller version of it.
Should an Illinois business add AI to its business name to appear in AI answers?
No. Two of the four firm names in the October 2, 2026 Illinois overview played on AI, but the overview named them from their Business Profile cards, and Google's guidelines forbid adding keywords to a Profile name that are not part of the real business name. A Profile renamed for search can be suspended. The safe route is a real name, a precise category and service pages that say what the business does.
What should a Will County business do while the county is growing?
Write for the towns it actually serves, by name. Will County added 11,674 residents between 2020 and 2024, more than any other collar county, and has 128 marketing firms, 0.18 per 1,000, so new households searching from Joliet, Plainfield or New Lenox find few local pages written for them. One clear page per real service, with the town and county in its opening sentence, is the cheapest place to start.
Is Chicago too competitive for a small business to be named in AI answers?
Chicago is dense but not closed. Cook County has 2,442 marketing firms, 0.47 per 1,000, and all four firms in the October 2, 2026 overview were in Chicago or its suburbs, all chosen from Business Profile cards rather than long articles. A Chicago business with an exact Profile, a neighborhood named on its service pages and a visible price competes on the things the overview actually read.
How long before an Illinois business appears in AI answers?
No honest firm can give a date. Crawler access fixes register quickly; OpenAI's crawler documentation puts the delay for a robots.txt change at about 24 hours. Page rewrites and schema fill the first two months. Whether the Illinois overview or ChatGPT starts naming the business is judged after 90 to 180 days against the capture taken before the first change, and reported either way.
Does Portland Peak SEO have an office or Business Profile in Illinois?
No. Its only office and Business Profile are in Lake Oswego, OR. It does not create an Illinois address it does not occupy, because a Business Profile has to sit where the business really serves customers, and the Illinois overview on October 2, 2026 was built from exactly those Profiles. In Illinois, the client's own Profile is the one that matters, and Portland Peak SEO works on it through the client's account.
